Because of the difference in copyright laws in UK as opposed to US, this label has managed to issue quite a few box sets, usually of four CD's in each box set with about 100 songs or cuts on each of them. In UK, apparently if the recordings are 50 years or more in age, they have packaged them bas a box set with a fairly decent selection and narrative book at a price that is very affordable and the quality of the recordings is also very good.

For example, picked up a great box set, Proper Box 129, entitled "The Cosimo Matassa Story, which includes a lot of cuts that the record producer was involved with: Smiley Lewis, Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Lowell Fulson, Guitar Slim, Professor Longhair, Little Richard, Bobby Charles, Huey Piano Smith, Shirley & Lee, Art Neville, Clarence Frogman Henry and many others. What a great treasure trove or music! Shows the versatility of sounds that came out of New Orleans from the late 40's to the early 70's. Some I had not heard in years when I was growing up in Houston, Texas. Set also includes a 40 page book with pictures and historical data on virtually every single song and there are 120 songs on these four disks.

Also have picked up a couple of other Proper Box sets, such as "From Boppin' HillBilly to Red Hot Rockabilly" with 128 songs from many which often were very local to those everybody should know like Carl Perkins, Elvis, and Marty Robbins. These show that Elvis did not appear out of nowhere but his Sun tracks certainly do show that he had learned a lot from his predecessors when he blazed his meteoric rise in the mid 50's. Again a 64 page book is also included with lots of great information and pictures.

Also highly recommended re ProperBox sets for Bob Wills and I will be looking for others from Slim Gaillard, Charlie Christian, Muddy Waters, Bill Haley, Lefty Frizzell and many others such as Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk. I have not yet seen a complete listing of the ProperBox sets but it does look like some are getting harder and harder to find although many of them are available through Amazon at great prices.Roger Killiannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8194318248096756018.post-72904620321986648502012-03-04T02:01:32.250-05:002012-03-04T02:01:32.250-05:00On a separate note, seriously, my cameras are awfu...On a separate note, seriously, my cameras are awful.
